Green gases—such as the carbon dioxide, or CO2, that comes from power plants and cars—are heating the atmosphere to such an extent that the next ice age, predicted to be the deepest in millions of years, may be postponed indefinitely.

        (76)

In about 10,000 years, the study suggests, Antarctic-like ice sheets would cover much of Canada, Europe, and Asia. “I think the present carbon dioxide levels are probably sufficient to prevent that from ever happening,” said Crowley, whose study will appear tomorrow in

                                           (77)

the journal Nature.

For the past three million years, Earth’s climate has changed through dozens of ice ages, with thick ice sheets growing from the

                                          (79)

poles and then shrinking(缩小) back again. These ice ages used to last about 41,000 years. But in the past half a million years, these ice ages

each lasted about a hundred years long. Meanwhile, the temperature

          (80)

changes during and between these ice ages became more extreme,

                                         (81)

rising to new highs and lows. These extreme climate changes don’t

(78)

appear to be easing anytime soon, according to evidence recorded in Earth’s rocks, Crowley said.

The researchers found that between 10,000 and 100,000 years from now, Earth would enter into another ice age---more severe than any seen in millions of years. “though this extreme ice age would be unusual, so is the climate that people are creating by giving off huge amounts of greenhouse gasses,” Crowley said, “it’s hard to say what’s going to happen.” Prehistoric-climate expert Lorraine Lisiecki also said,” This is the only study that suggests the next ice age could be much more extreme than those of the previous one million years.”

                               (84)

Many more tests are needed to see if the study’s prediction seems

       (85)

correct, said Lisiecki, of the University of California, Santa Barbra. But she agreed that we might never find out what would have happened naturally, due to human-caused global warming. “Current

                          (83)

greenhouse gas amount is probably similar to three million years ago and is high enough to prevent an ice age for hundreds of thousands of years,” she said.

Sources of information

◆   Crowley’s research report which will be _77_in Nature.

◆   Prehistoric-climate expert Lorraine Lisieck’s review.

Facts

◆   Greenhouse gasses _78_ to a warmer atmosphere.

◆   For the past three million years, Earth’s climate has gone through dozens of ice ages.

◆   Earth’s thick ice sheets_79_and shrank alternatively(交替地) in history.

◆   Recent ice ages each seem to have lasted _80_than half a million years ago.

_82_

◆   _83_activities have a great effect on earth’s climate.

◆   In 100 to 1000 centuries, the earth would begin another period of permanent ice sheets.

◆   The next ice age could be much more extreme than_84_.

◆   It is _85_to do more tests about the prediction of Earth’s climate change.

本文用了5段,第一段是title,第二、三、四段是facts,最后一段是the researcher’s predictions(opinions, ideas, or views).

76.要解决76题,首先要能读懂第一段的长句,抓主干-- Green gases -- are heating the atmosphere -- the next ice age --may be postponed。其次,原文中用的是被动态,题设中用的是主动的表达方式。

77.根据题干,在原文中找到细节,whose study will appear tomorrow in

                                           (77)

the journal Nature.

(extreme)

82.本题是作者对温室气体对地球产生后果的预测(观点……)

83.本题也是细节题,说到人类活动(human activities)对地球气温产生的影响。

84.根据原文细节的意思,把原文中的名词转换成题设里所需的副词(before、ever)即可。

85.根据最后一段首句(主题句)和容易得出答案:needed(necessary,important)
